They excrete cysts in the environment, able to infect many other animals, and humans can become infected either by ingesting the cysts (by direct contact with cats or through food or water contaminated by cat faeces), or by eating poorly cooked meat containing cysts, especially pork and mutton.	Ze scheiden cysten in het milieu uit waarmee een groot aantal andere diersoorten en de mens kunnen worden geïnfecteerd, hetzij door inname van de cysten (door rechtstreeks contact met katten of via met kattenontlasting besmet voedsel of water), hetzij door het eten van onvoldoende verhit vlees dat cysten bevat, met name varkens- en schapenvlees.
Prophylactic measures include adequate hygiene in meat processing (especially of pork), hand hygiene and protection of water supplies.	Preventieve maatregelen zijn onder meer adequate hygiëne bij de verwerking van vlees (met name varkensvlees), handhygiëne en bescherming van watervoorzieningen.
Streptococcus suis is transmitted to humans through close contact with infected pigs or pork, and people in occupational contact with pigs (e.g. pig farmers, abattoir workers, veterinarians) represent the principal risk group for the disease.	Streptococcus suis wordt op de mens overgedragen via nauw contact met besmette varkens of besmet varkensvlees. Mensen die beroepsmatig met varkens in contact komen (zoals varkensboeren, medewerkers van slachterijen, dierenartsen), vormen de voornaamste risicogroep voor de ziekte.
