When in August 2007 the Italian authorities notified an outbreak of Chikungunya virus in the northern region of Emilia-Romagna, this event represented the first documented autochthonous transmission of the virus on the European continent.	Toen de Italiaanse autoriteiten in augustus 2007 een uitbraak van het chikungunyavirus vaststelden in het noorden van de regio Emilia-Romagna, was dat de eerste gedocumenteerde verspreiding van het virus op het Europese continent.
The majority of the 700 human cases which have been reported since 1968 originated from Southeast Asia, i.e. China, Vietnam, and Northern Thailand.	Het merendeel van de 700 gevallen bij de mens die sinds 1968 zijn gemeld, is afkomstig uit Zuidoost-Azië (China, Vietnam en het noorden van Thailand).
Other viruses causing hemorrhagic fevers were reported in South America: Machupo in 1956 in the Beni province of Bolivia, Junín in north Argentina, Guanarito in Portuguesa state in Venezuela in 1989, Sabia in Brazil in 1990 and more recently Chapare in 2004 in Bolivia.	Andere virussen die hemorragische koorts veroorzaken, zijn in Zuid-Amerika gemeld: het machupovirus in 1956 in de provincie Beni van Bolivia, het juninvirus in het noorden van Argentinië, het guanaritovirus in de deelstaat Portuguesa van Venezuela in 1989, het sabiavirus in Brazilië in 1990 en meer recentelijk, in 2004, het chaparevirus in Bolivia.
