Health literacy can be defined as the capacity that an individual has to access and effectively use health-related information, in order to promote and maintain good health.Gezondheidsgeletterdheid kan worden gedefinieerd als iemands vermogen om gezondheidsgerelateerde informatie in te winnen en effectief te gebruiken ter bevordering en behoud van een goede gezondheid.
While literacy can enable people to understand and communicate health information and concerns, when these are applied to a health context, it is called health literacy.Geletterdheid stelt mensen in staat informatie te begrijpen en met anderen uit te wisselen. Wanneer deze informatie betrekking heeft op gezondheidsonderwerpen, wordt van gezondheidsgeletterdheid gesproken.
A person can be literate and still have limited health literacy.Iemand kan geletterd zijn, maar toch over een beperkte gezondheidsgeletterdheid beschikken.
Examples of actions that require health literacy skills include properly reading and adhering to a care or prevention program as well as being able to use the available healthcare services rationally and ponder individual behavioural change.Voorbeelden van handelingen die gezondheidsgeletterdheid vereisen, zijn het goed lezen en opvolgen van een zorg- of preventieprogramma, het in staat zijn op rationele wijze gebruik te maken van de beschikbare gezondheidszorgdiensten en het nadenken over persoonlijke gedragsveranderingen.
