Arenaviruses are enveloped viruses (about 120 nm diameter) with a bi-segmented negative strand RNA genome.Arenavirussen zijn envelopvirussen (diameter ongeveer 120 nm) met een dubbelgesegmenteerd negatiefstrengs RNA-genoom.
The typical image in electronic microscopy showing grainy ribosomal particles (“ arena ” in latin) inside the virions gave the name to this family of viruses.Deze virusfamilie dankt haar naam aan het kenmerkende beeld onder een elektronenmicroscoop waarbij ribosomen als korrels (arena in het Latijn) in de virionen te zien zijn.
