Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii.Toxoplasmose is een infectie die wordt veroorzaakt door de parasiet Toxoplasma gondii.
Usually toxoplasmosis goes with no symptoms in humans (and animals), but healthy individuals may experience swollen lymph glands.Doorgaans gaat toxoplasmose bij de mens (en bij dieren) niet vergezeld van verschijnselen, maar gezonde personen kunnen wel opgezette lymfeklieren krijgen.
Pregnant women, also without symptoms, may transmit the infection to the foetus, which can result in abortion, still-birth, perinatal death (due to disseminated toxoplasmosis), or congenital infection with severe malformation affecting the eyes and the brain.Zwangere vrouwen, ook degenen zonder verschijnselen, kunnen de infectie op het ongeboren kind overdragen, wat kan leiden tot miskraam, doodgeboorte, overlijden kort na de geboorte (als gevolg van verspreide toxoplasmose) of aangeboren infectie met ernstige misvorming van ogen en hersenen.
