The total number of patients getting a healthcare-associated infection (HCAI) in the EU every year can be estimated at 3 000 000 and approximately 50 000 deaths are estimated to occur every year as a consequence of the infection. Approximately 20–30% of HCAI are considered to be preventable by intensive hygiene and control programmes.	Men gaat ervan uit dat ongeveer 20–30 % van deze gezondheidszorggerelateerde infecties te voorkomen is door intensieve hygiëne en bestrijdingsprogramma's.
